RANGELY, Colo. - For the first time in program history, the CSI Women's Soccer team is playoff bound, as they clinch a spot in the top four of the Scenic West Conference after a 5-0 win over Colorado Northwestern on Thursday afternoon.
With USU-Eastern defeating North Idaho earlier in the day, the objective was straightforward for the Golden Eagles heading into their penultimate regular season game, win and in. The Golden Eagles wasted no time jumping out to a quick lead as Macey Call scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute, immediately followed by a goal from Presley Houghton in the 17th minute to give CSI the early cushion.
The Golden Eagles weren't satisfied though as Halle Hall found the back of the net in the 21st minute, and Maggie Anderson scored in the final seconds of the first half to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead, and just 45 minutes away from a playoff berth.
CSI held strong in the second half, firing off another nine shots, while holding the Spartans to three shots in the half, four overall. Brielle Cooper got in on the action, scoring the fifth and final goal in the 66th minute.
Ultimately the Golden Eagles outshot the Spartans 19-4 and 10-2 on shots on goal. Avery Charlesworth was once again solid in goal for CSI, making two saves on her way to a win and a clean sheet. Call had two assists in addition to her one goal, and Carina Muegge had an assist in the win.
In just the third year of their existence, CSI Women's Soccer is heading to the Scenic West Conference Tournament, and their first shot at a conference championship as the win moves them to 9-4, clinching them a spot in the top four. There seed and opponent is yet to be determined for the conference tournament, as there is one more regular season game to help straighten that out. The 20th-ranked Golden Eagles will finish up their regular season as they travel to take on 15th-ranked Snow College on Saturday. The Badgers bested the Golden Eagles 1-0 back on September 26th.
